Antebellum Plans for all New York City-owned Real Estate

Communication from the Comptroller of the Commissioners of the Sinking Funds transmitting Maps and Lists of Real Estate belonging to the Corporation of the City of New York January 1 1860.

DESCRIPTION: Quarto volume with 12 tabular lists and 12 engraved maps of all 281 parcels of real estate owned by the Corporation of the City of New York. Part of a report issued by New York City Comptroller Robert T. Haws in 1860. No holdings in World Cat; no sales recorded in AMPR.

Nearly one hundred years ago, in 1920, Anderson Galleries of Park Avenue, New York noted the scarcity of this volume:
"No records of this exceedingly important volume. The lists are of every piece of land and every building owned by the city, to a total of 281. The maps are 12 very large and fine folding engraved plates showing the location, size, and frontage of every Park, Police property, Market, Fire Department building, School, Court building, Hospital;, Prison, Correctional institution, Island, Common land and Leased Property, and every other piece of real estate belonging to the corporation. Probably no other similar historical and topographical record is in existence. No doubt the volume was issued in a very small number of copies for a very few officials, and has thus never come to the attention of those interested in the past records of the city."

Plates are all dated within to January 1, 1860. Maps by George F. Nesbitt and Company. Stationers & Printers. 165, 167, 169 171, Pearl Street cor. of Pine.
