Antique optical view of naval ship construction

Navalia, 30e vue d-optique representant Chantier pour la Construction des Vaisseaux

DESCRIPTION: Fine French antique optical print (vue d'optique) of an mid eighteenth-century shipyard with ship's carpenters planking the hull a 20-gun warship while two other ships are shown being framed in the background. This interesting scene shows workmen using adzes and board saws to prepare various ship's structural frame members while typical port actvities are underway on all sides.

Although the location is undocumented the print could be based on ship-building activities at Toulon, the home base of France's fleet of warships during that period.

This scarce engraved print was published by Jean-Francois Daumont with attribution at bottom right reading: "A Paris chez Daumont rue St. Martin".
