DESCRIPTION: Black-and-white pictorial map of Biloxi and Ocean Springs, Mississippi, featuring Walter Inglis Anderson's distinctive design of the Gulf Coast's waterfront communities, boats and wildlife. Biloxi occupies the left side of the composition, with Ocean Springs and Gulf Hills above and Deer Island extending across the foreground.
Bold outlines and repeating patterns on this 20th-century map unite buildings, bridges, wharves and sailing vessels with fish, birds and island vegetation. Deer appear among the trees on Deer Island, beside a prominent compass rose. An ornamental border of arches and curled corner motifs encloses the scene. Geography is simplified to emphasize the relationship between the coastal towns, surrounding waters and island habitats.
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art dates the original design to circa the 1940s. Anderson's treatment combines a recognizable local landscape with the rhythmic forms characteristic of his work. Silk-screen reproduction print after Walter Inglis Anderson's circa-1940s design, printed by Carolyn Fournier Anderson, as identified by the imprint on the reverse. Printed in black on textured paper. This example is undated; the circa-1940s date refers to the original design
