It is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north. The source of the river is a large marshy area in Indian River County that flows north and turns eastward at Jacksonville, FL to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean. <br></br> From the second part of "Portolano de la America...", published in 1818 by Spain's Admiralty department, the Dirección de Hidrografía. In 1809 the Direccion first published this atlas of plans of bays, harbors, and ports from Spain’s New World possessions: "Portolano de la America Septentrional Construido en la Direccion de Trabajos Hidrograficos". The two books were intended for use only within the railway system and include: <div class="indenttextblocksingle"> <ul style="list-style-type: circle;"> <li>Northbound and southbound mainline of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida.</li> <li>Track charts of A. C. L. R. R. feeder lines including Dunnellon to Wilcox, Trilby to St. Petersburg, Uceta to Tampa, and other routes.</li> </ul> </div> By the Office of the Chief Engineer for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company ca. 1938. Profiles are printed via the cyanotype process (blueprint). The map contains summary recommendations and observations made by the Jacksonville Area Planning Board in their 1977 Study of the St. Johns River. Map 30" W x 10" H. Verso blank. <br></br> The planning study by the Jacksonville Area Planning Board (JAPD), is a 174-page environmental and urban study of the 39-mile extent of the St. Johns River found in Duval County, Florida: the <b>St. Johns River Corridor</b>. The study contains over 40 detailed large-scale, sectional geographic maps and thematic maps for land use along the St. Johns River Corridor (e.g. Military, Recreational). Light card cover. <br></br> Based on an analysis of five environmental factors the JAPD recommended land usage-intensity levels. They proposed design guidelines, development and improvement proposals, and program recommendations for 21 sections of shoreline along the corridor. Details	1925	Howell-and-Graves	Muscle-Shoals--Alabama-City-of-Unlimited-Opportunity	Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a small city nestled along the Tennessee River, is perhaps best known today for its outsized influence on American music. The iconic "Muscle Shoals Sound," born in the city's legendary recording studios, has left an indelible mark on genres ranging from soul and R&B to rock and country. <br><br> But a century ago, Muscle Shoals was the epicenter of a different kind of boom - one fueled by grand industrial ambitions and the promise of a brighter future. <br><br> In the 1920s, automotive pioneer Henry Ford set his sights on transforming the sleepy Alabama town into a bustling metropolis to rival Detroit (1). The centerpiece of this vision was the Wilson Dam, a hydroelectric marvel that would provide cheap, abundant power to fuel the growth of industry. <br><br> Sensing an opportunity, New York City developers Howell and Graves began heavily promoting Muscle Shoals as the "City of Unlimited Opportunity." This advertising brochure, circa 1925, with a rare birds-eye view map showcases their grand plans. The map, which stretches from Seven Mile Island to the Wilson Dam, depicts a thriving industrial landscape, with the Tennessee River winding majestically in the background. <br><br> At the time, nitrate plants were the region's biggest employers, and the promise of readily available electricity was expected to lure even more manufacturers to the area. Howell and Graves themselves invested heavily in the city's future, constructing the first City Hall, homes, and the Howell and Graves Jr. High School, which still stands today as a Board of Education building. <br><br> However, the grand vision for Muscle Shoals was not to be. Much of the infrastructure built by Howell and Graves went unused as the Great Depression stifled the city's growth. The promised industrial boom never materialized, and Muscle Shoals settled into a quieter existence. <br><br>

The island was first settled by Polynesians who navigated the Pacific Ocean using the stars, arriving in Hawaii around 400-800 AD. These early settlers developed a complex society with a strict social hierarchy and a subsistence economy based on fishing and agriculture. <br><br> In the late 18th century, European explorers arrived in Hawaii, with Captain James Cook being the first recorded European to visit Maui in 1778. The island later became a center for the whaling industry and a popular port for ships traveling between North America and Asia. <br><br> Lahaina, located on the west coast of Maui, was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early 19th century. It was also a major whaling port and a center of commerce. Today, Lahaina is a popular tourist destination known for its historic buildings, art galleries, and restaurants. <br><br> Kapalua, situated on the northwest coast of Maui, was once a plantation growing pineapples and coffee. In the 1970s, the area was transformed into a resort destination featuring world-class golf courses, luxurious accommodations, and pristine beaches. <br><br> Haleakala, a massive shield volcano that forms the eastern portion of Maui, is a significant feature of the island. The volcano's crater is a popular destination for hiking, stargazing, and watching the sunrise. In 1916, Haleakala National Park was established to protect the unique volcanic landscape and the endemic species that inhabit the area. <br><br>
