Marijuana Parade on the Democratic Convention. Bastille Day. San Francisco.1984

March on the Democratic Convention Bastille Day Marijuana Parade Saturday July 14, 1984

DESCRIPTION: Very scarce original 1984 cannabis protest poster promoting San Francisco’s Bastille Day Marijuana Parade on Saturday, July 14. This colorful, imaginative view transforms the city into a countercultural landscape, with marijuana plants growing like shrubs across the rooftops and marchers converging on the Moscone Center. Scheduled two days before the Democratic National Convention opened on July 16, the parade brought marijuana legalization into the political spectacle surrounding the gathering. Participants were instructed to assemble at Oak and Cole Streets at 1:00 p.m. before marching to the convention site.

The poster combines pictorial city imagery, irreverent humor, and street-level activism. Attributed to Dana Franzen, whose work appears on related posters, although this example is unsigned. Offset lithograph.

A sign above the Moscone Center turns San Francisco’s historic Yerba Buena name into a cannabis-themed welcome: “Welcome to Yerba Buena Center and don't forget ‘Yerba Buena’ is Spanish for ‘Good Weed.’” Another slogan reads, “Free the half-billion.”

A sign above the Moscone Center in San Francisco reads:
"Welcome to Yerba Buena Center and don't forget "Yerba Buena" is Spanish for "Good Weed." Also, "Free the half-billion."

Dana Franzen was a counterculture illustrator whose marijuana-legalization posters combined underground-comix imagery with pointed political satire. His documented designs include the 1982 White House Smoke-In poster, depicting Ronald and Nancy Reagan with cannabis imagery, and the 1985 “Rally Against Reefer Madness—Stop the Witch Hunt!” poster, targeting drug enforcement and police brutality. His work appeared as centerfold posters in the Yipster Times. These related works provide context for the present poster’s attribution to Franzen, although this unsigned example remains attributed rather than confirmed.
