Dawn of a New Age

DESCRIPTION: Fine 1939 Art Deco sample calendar by artist Ruehl Heckman (1890-1942). This aviation-related calendar "Dawn of a New Age" shows a four-engine aircraft cruising above Manhattan as the sun breaks through the morning clouds to the east. The 'dawn' could be considered to be the end of the Great Depression which started with the stock market crash in October, 1929 and ended in the late 1930's.

This original calendar was printed by the Thomas D. Murphy Company of Red Oak, Iowa "The Birthplace of Art Calendars." With a single unmarked calendar sheet for January 1939. New York City.

Heckman had homes in Pasadena and Laguna Beach, California until 1942 when he died in an auto accident.

Holmes concealed revolver</small> </div><br> The first sheet of four (Fig. 1.) shows an actual size depiction of the revolver concealed within the user's fist, only the short barrel extending beyond the fingers of a hand stretched from a cuff-linked shirt. Sheets 2, 3, and 4 are double size renderings of the revolver's mechanical details. The sketches are dated October 11, 1911 and witnessed by Ruth Vickery Holmes (Bradford's wife) and Hilma Christenson. <br><br> In 1903 Bradford Butterick Holmes is recorded as a first year student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with his home town listed as Mare Island, California. Apparently Bradford Holmes wed Ruth in May 1909 and together they had two children, Elizabeth and Robert. <br><br> Bradford Holmes was a prolific inventor. Between 1912 and 1952 Holmes was granted over 70 patents, some for Bendix Aviation, his presumed employer. Subtitled "San Joaquin Power Club", apparently this camp was originally a private club for the San Joaquin Power Company. Today the camp is run by the Pacific Service Employees Association. <br><br> The map shows hikers, horse-back riders, dancers, hunters, boaters, Boy Scouts, fishermen, and swimmers, all enjoying themselves outdoors on what appears to be some steep slopes. McDougald's store is located next to the shoreline and red-roofed Sam's Place seems to be the local watering hole, surrounded by apartments, dormitories, and numerous outhouses. The camp was named after businessman Arthur Wishon. <br><br> Arthur Emory Wishon, often known as A. Emory Wishon, was a pioneering figure in the development of hydroelectric power in California, using Bass Lake water. He served as a chief engineer and later as a vice president for San Joaquin Light and Power Corporation. His work significantly contributed to the construction of multiple dams and power plants in the region. <br><br>
