This item has found a new home with a very serious west-coast collector, but please visit another example of Herry Perry's beautiful puzzle map now in RareCharts' inventory for only the second time in 13 years.

Fine 3-ply wooden promotional map puzzle, created during the Golden Age of pictorial maps for Imperial and International Communications Ltd. (IICL) by the Chad Valley Company. Designed by Herry Perry, London in 1930. Complete with all ~150 pieces. Includes the original cardboard box, which was manufactured in Holland.

This fine Art Deco style map of the IICL network predates McDonald Gill's Cable and Wireless Great Circle map by 15 years (1945). Art Deco style characters represent the Anemoi or mythological Roman wind Gods (Boreas, Zephyrus, Notus, and Eurus)) and the Greek wind gods, or Venti (Aquilo, Favonius, Auster, and Vulturnus). Green lines mark the cables of the I and ICL and the dotted green lines their wireless.

Herry Perry (1875 - 1962)

Heather "Herry" Perry was an English artist and designer born on March 23, 1897, as Anne Erica Thackeray Perry in London, England. Perry attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. Perry was a versatile artist and designer who worked in a variety of mediums. She is perhaps best known for her work as a commercial artist, creating designs for book covers, posters, and other printed materials. She was also recognized for her contributions to the field of pictorial maps, designing a number of promotional maps for companies like Imperial and International Communications Ltd. and the British Overseas Airways Corporation. during the 1920s and 1930s.

Perry's work is highly collectible and is featured in the collections of museums and galleries around the world. Heather "Herry" Perry passed away on December 11, 1962.

"</div> <br>Thus begins the introduction to this very interesting and quirky map of the Thames River, published in 1901 and oriented to the fishermen and boaters of the area. Filled with information about the Thames, not only locks, water depth, bridges and other navigational information, but also, inns, hotels, and boatyards. <br></br> A reader does not have to go too far perusing the notes on this chart to need a good nautical reference book, as some of the practices of that era are now outdated or not applicable in other countries. For example this note on Hart's or Eaton's Weir: <div class="indenttextblock">"The only weir on the Thames which has to be 'shot'. There is usually someone at the neighboring inn who will lend a hand in drawing the paddles and rymers." </div> Hmmm. Turns out that the term "paddles and rymers" refers to a method of lock contruction for "flash locks" based on a single gate. The method of constuction dates back to the medieval period. Paddle and rymer weirs are operated by placing large wooden posts – the rymers – into the bottom of the river. To control the water flow, paddles of different heights were placed against the rymers. When the paddles were removed water would pour through the opening and boaters would "shoot" the opening. This method of construction is now considered dangerous and most paddle and rymer weirs have been updated. <br></br> Published by Edward Stanton, 12, 13, & 14, Long Acre, W.C.
