Bird's-Eye View of Toulon Harbor and Fortifications

Bird's-Eye View of Toulon Harbor and Fortifications

DESCRIPTION: Engraved bird's-eye view of Toulon, France, published by Pieter Schenk ca. 1702, showing the fortified Mediterranean port and its surrounding hills. The city's angular defensive walls and harbor basins appear at the head of the roadstead, while coastal forts and batteries guard the approaches. Sailing vessels occupy the harbor, and clouds of cannon smoke emphasize the port's military character.

An inset map of Provence places Toulon in its regional setting. The main view identifies La Seyne, Fort St. Louis, the Tour de la Grosse, and other coastal defenses, with annotations recording numbers of cannon and mortars. Dutch and French text beneath the image describes Toulon's history, fortifications, and importance as a French naval arsenal. A decorative engraved border encloses the composition.
