DESCRIPTION: Map of the first Shand's Bridge over the St. Johns River in Florida from 1928. Map in folding brochure 18" x 6" with information on the Shand's Toll Bridge in the year of its opening. The bridge was conceived, financed and built privately by the St. Augustine Green-Cove Springs Bridge Company.

In 1928 the bridge was a toll bridge of wooden construction, except for the draw span. The current bridge, located just south of the old bridge, opened in 1963.

St. Augustine is depicted with a neatly laid out network of perpendicular streets and surrounded by a high wall with several bastions. On the North and South ends and outside of the walled city are noted "Citta Indiana" or American Indian habitations. Numerous soundings and depictions of sandbanks and other hazards surround the entrance to the port. <br></br> The landing place of General James Oglethorpe is identified at the left end of the coastline (Sbarco del Gen. Oglethorpe). The General landed at that spot with an English force in 1740 during the War of Jenkin's Ear. <br></br> Orignally published in the Gazzetiere Americano, from Livorno, Italy. The small scale map of the area around St. Augustine appears only to consider railway lines (F.E.C., A.C.C.) of importance as railways are highlighted in color and stops along each route are identified. <br></br> Booklet (folds to 4" x 9") presented with the compliments of the St. Augustine Hotel Association. Fine cover graphics of period clothing. Booklet art work, engraving and printing by the Record Company, St. Augustine. Dated between 1916 and 1919 based on information provided about the Flagler Hospital, under construction at printing, after a fire in 1916 destroyed much of the original structure.
