Black and white photographic record of U.S. Navy vessels published in 1912 by the noted Boston marine photographer Nathaniel Stebbins. Contains roughly 200 photographs that capture a transitional period in naval architecture and shows how some remnants of sailing ship design lingered well into the era of steam-power. Brief technical descriptions beneath each photo capture key dimensions and armament of each ship.
Contains a supplement and photographs on the Revenue Cutter Service by Capt. Preston Uberroth. Three years after the publication of this work the Revenue Cutter Service was merged with the Lifesaving Service to form the new United States Coast Guard.
