Small antique lithographed nautical chart of northern Cape Cod, Provincetown, Massachusetts and the harbor derived from U.S. Coast Survey chart No. 10 and overlaid with topographic details. Lifesaving stations, lighthouses, soundings, and navigational aids are shown. Water shown in blue. Features include Race Point, Wood End Light, Long Point Light, and Peaked Hill Bar lifesaving station.

Very attractive hand coloring. Features include Race Point, Wood End Bar, North Truro, Clapp's Pond, Herring Cove, Shank Painter Pond; and the Highland, Crow Hill, and Peaked Hill Life Saving Stations. <br></br> Much useful information including soundings, anchorages, ranges, buoys, and bottom composition are presented by Eldridge in a clear graphic style that would have been appreciated by and helpful to mariners. For instance, this chart of Provincetown, MA. is printed with bold black coastal outlines that would have been much easier to read under poor lighting conditions. Lighthouses, bouys, and other aids to navigation are highlighted in red. Bottom composition is presented according to an attached table of abbreviations. <br></br> Published by Wilfrid O. White of Boston, Massachusetts. White was G. W. Eldridge's son-in-law who contnued to sell Eldridge's charts after his death until 1932. <br></br> Attribution reads: 'AUTHORIZED and PUBLISHED By Geo. Not only does the chart have a different look than a printed chart but the item raises questions as to why so much care was placed on its creation. Signed by K.F. Nickerson and dated to February 1955. <br></br> Detailed mid 20th-century manuscript chart of Cape Cod, Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay. The MS chart is drawn on the verso of an earlier chart from 1935. Nickerson apparently cannibalized an old chart simply to create his chart on the back. We don't know why Nickerson spent so much time on the chart but it is evident he spent hours meticulously copying from an unknown source. Perhaps the map was constructed for sale as a tourist keepsake. More likely it had some utility to Nickerson in his occupation, because the chart detail is at a granular level that could be used for navigation. <br></br> Contains info on radio beacons, depth soundings, maritime hazards, aids to navigation and much more. Scale 1/2 inch = 1 mile.

Numerous locations from Duxbury to Pochet Island and aids to navigation are highlighted and/or annotated in manuscript pen and ink (e.g. Nauset Beach Beacons, Wood End Light) Includes Provincetown and Provincetown Harbor. Three inset coastal recognition views as seen from offshore. <br></br> This is a scarce, separately issued, rolled hydrographic chart of the Massachusetts Coast from 1872, not one of the common folded versions on thin paper from annual report of the U.S. Coast Survey to Congress. This edition issued 1880 by C.P. Patterson. Updates to aids-to-navigation date the print to 1885. The price of this chart when first issued was 40 cents. Electrotype copy #2 [1]. <br></br> [1] Artifact of the electrotype reprographic technique to create a intaglio copy of the original hand-engraved copper plate, a process the U.S. Coast Survey adopted around 1850. As a soft medium, copper plates could only withstand print runs of perhaps 200 copies before the plates wore down. To enable larger print runs, a mold of the original plate was created in wax or another soft medium. Then, using an electro-chemical process ( electrotyping ), the mold was coated with a metal layer, typically copper. Printers were then able to produce intaglio output from the new electrotype copper copy, while preserving the original hand-engraved plate. <br></br> Logo.

The island was first settled by Polynesians who navigated the Pacific Ocean using the stars, arriving in Hawaii around 400-800 AD. These early settlers developed a complex society with a strict social hierarchy and a subsistence economy based on fishing and agriculture. <br><br> In the late 18th century, European explorers arrived in Hawaii, with Captain James Cook being the first recorded European to visit Maui in 1778. The island later became a center for the whaling industry and a popular port for ships traveling between North America and Asia. <br><br> Lahaina, located on the west coast of Maui, was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early 19th century. It was also a major whaling port and a center of commerce. Today, Lahaina is a popular tourist destination known for its historic buildings, art galleries, and restaurants. <br><br> Kapalua, situated on the northwest coast of Maui, was once a plantation growing pineapples and coffee. In the 1970s, the area was transformed into a resort destination featuring world-class golf courses, luxurious accommodations, and pristine beaches. <br><br> Haleakala, a massive shield volcano that forms the eastern portion of Maui, is a significant feature of the island. The volcano's crater is a popular destination for hiking, stargazing, and watching the sunrise. In 1916, Haleakala National Park was established to protect the unique volcanic landscape and the endemic species that inhabit the area. <br><br>
