DESCRIPTION: Illustrated American peace-movement poster dated 1984, combining political satire, counterculture imagery and a pictorial itinerary of summer gatherings and demonstrations. Beneath a broad rainbow, a procession of vehicles and protesters winds past San Francisco landmarks toward a prominent "1984 Peace Caravan" banner. Cannabis plants, musicians, tipis and peace encampments connect the campaign for disarmament with the communal culture of the Rainbow Gathering.
Named destinations include the Rainbow Gathering for World Peace at Mount Shasta, July 1-7; the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, July 16-20; the Los Angeles Olympic Games; a peace encampment in the Four Corners region of New Mexico; and the Republican National Convention in Dallas, August 18-23, as printed. The composition presents these locations through recognizable landmarks and separate scenes rather than a conventional geographic outline.
Placards proclaim "Disarm Now!" and "Summer Project: Change the World!" Political caricatures, a police barricade and a miniature tank introduce a satirical counterpoint to the festive procession. Four telephone numbers along the lower margin invite readers to obtain action information. A graphic expression of the overlap between peace activism, cannabis culture and electoral protest during the 1984 presidential campaign.
