DESCRIPTION: Fragments of a larger manuscript pictorial map ca. 1930 of the Soviet Caucasus with early oil industry views. The fragments feature inhabitants of the republics in traditional outfits, some views of the oil derricks and traditional "bazaar" (marketplaces). Illustration of oil derricks show them enclosed in a fabric-covered frame to protect the drilling equipment against the very harsh cold.
The first fragment features Tajik, Turkmen & Uzbek ASSR. The second fragment features Dagestan ASSR, Kabardino-Balkar ASSR, Transcaucasian SFSR and other autonomous republics.
Attributed to a GIZ / IZOGIZ State design bureau worker. Izogiz was the fine arts section of Ogiz publishing. Ink, pencil, gouache on paper.This matches the style and form of Roy Kemp, a known photographer active in New Orleans during the mid-20th century. Kemp specialized in nightclub and glamour photography, producing promotional shots for performers at venues like the 500 Club, Sho-Bar, and other Bourbon Street establishments.
Kemp was one of a small number of photographers who documented the burlesque and cabaret scenes in New Orleans.
His work often appeared uncredited in postcard sets, handbills, and matchbooks from clubs on Bourbon Street.
His signature typically appears in the lower corner of images, either in stylized cursive or block letters.
