Scarce map of the eastern portion of Mount Desert Island by Waldon Bates, Edward Rand, and Herbert Jaques after the U.S. Coast Survey. In 1922 Acadia National Park (in green) was known as Lafayette National Park. Includes coastal areas of Mount Desert Island on Frenchman's Bay and Somes Sound.

Waldron Bates began exploring Mount Desert Island in the 1880's. From 1900 to 1909, Bates was chairman of the Path Committee of the Bar Harbor Village Improvement Association (VIA). VIA's in each of the four island towns created most of the Mount Desert Island's trail system we know today, adding twenty-five miles of trails under Bate's leadership, including the Giant Slide, Canon Brook, Gorham Mountain, and Cadillac Cliffs Trails. Bates is well-known for the Bates cairn, a rock-constructed trail indicator which he designed:

"The cairns are built on two base columns of between 2 and 4 rocks, with a lintel stone, or platform, across the two columns and a pointer rock on top. The cairns help orient hikers and steer them in the right direction, while protecting the environment by keeping people on the trail." Over times the Bates cairns suffered damage from human or environmental forces. Starting in 2001, an effort began to rebuild the cairns and to educate the public about their design and importance." The scenic trip left Parker's Pier at the foot of Main Street in Bar Harbor, Maine three times daily at 10:30, 2:30 and 4:30. Cost was $1.00 per person. <br></br> As the brochure explained the route: <div class="indenttextblocksingle"> "The 'JUANITA' passes close to the principle [sic] water-front estates and continues to follow the shore to the 'ovens' (a peculiar rock formation) then makes its return trip back across the bay, giving a wonderful panoramic view of the mountains of ACADIA NATIONAL PARK and goes as far along the ocean side of the PARK as weather and time permits." </div> <br /> Captain Parker served as head mechanic for the Fabbri Brothers, builders of a radio station formerly located on Ocean Drive. Parker entered into the boating business about 1925 as a Yacht Agent and was responsible for bringing the first speed boat to Bar Harbor. (Source: Online: Bar Harbor Times. September 11, 1941). The map was created to represent the vegetation type, stand density and species distribution for South Allen Island in 1924. A century ago spruce predominated at the south end with pasture and scrub growth surrounding an old farm near island center. <br><br> Allen Island is a 450-acre private island located in St. George, Knox County, Maine. Situated near the southeastern end of Muscongus Bay, it is the largest island of a small cluster, with Benner Island to the northwest and Burnt Island to the east. <br><br> According to historical records, the island was first granted to William Allen, a prominent businessman and politician in Massachusetts, in the mid-18th century. Allen used the island primarily for fishing and hunting, and it remained in his family for several generations. In 1979, the island was purchased by Betsy Wyeth, wife of painter Andrew Wyeth. Prior to their ownership, the island had become a seasonal home for two fishing families living in decaying houses on the fringe of a fast-encroaching spruce forest. <br><br> <div id="0" align="center"> <a title=""></a> <img id="3" src="/zoomifyimages/SC_6676/SC_6676_Island.jpg" alt="Allen Island, Maine." width="300"/> <br><small>Allen Island, Maine courtesy Colby College.</small> </div><br> Wyeth was drawn to the island's stark natural beauty and solitude, which he found to be a perfect place for inspiration and artistic creation.
