Fine and scarce antique French nautical chart of the Falkland Islands after earlier surveys by Fitz-Roy, Robinson, and Sullivan of the British Admiralty. This large mid nineteenth-century navigation chart makes a very attractive presentation with its clean and bright appearance.

Originally published in 1850, this edition contains corrections to 1868. Contains inset elevation views of the Falklands coast.The Depot de la Marine was established in 1720 under the French Ministry of the Navy to collect, preserve, and publish nautical charts, sailing directions, and maritime intelligence for the French naval service. Its purpose was both archival and practical: to centralize geographic knowledge gathered from voyages, surveys, and colonial administration, and to convert that information into standardized charts for navigation. Over the eighteenth century the Depot became the principal hydrographic authority of France, issuing engraved sea charts that incorporated data from naval expeditions, colonial outposts, and scientific voyages.

Following the French Revolution, the institution was reorganized and its chart production expanded, particularly during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as global maritime competition intensified. The Depot de la Marine supervised official surveys, revised earlier charts, and maintained copperplates for continued reissue as coastal knowledge improved. In 1886 it was formally reorganized as the Service hydrographique de la Marine, the predecessor of today’s French hydrographic office. Charts bearing the Depot imprint remain important records of French naval activity, colonial expansion, and the technical development of European hydrography.

The engraving on this chart is quite exceptional and with added color could be a startling conversation piece. <br></br> Charts of the British Isles by Admiral Klint are scarce as most of his hydrographic efforts were spent on his native land, Sweden- principally the Gulf of Bothnia. Klint is also known for his sailing directions of the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland, and Gulf of Bothnia, published posthumously. No records in AMPR. <br></br> Robert Fitzroy studied at the Royal Naval College. His first command was the famed sloop HMS Beagle. During the Beagle's second voyage (Dec. 1831 - Oct. 1836) Fitzroy surveyed the coasts of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Straits of Magellan, accompanied by the naturalist Charles Darwin, whose later publications were largely based on discoveries and observations made during this voyage. Darwin and Fitzroy shared quarters aboard the Beagle and their discussions aboard ship are believed to have greatly influenced Darwin. <br></br> The main purpose of the expedition was to conduct a hydrographic survey of the coasts of the southern part of South America. The voyages of the Beagle established FitzRoy as an excellent navigator, a sound surveyor and a man of science. Suffering from depression, Fitzroy took his own life with a straight razor in 1865. Today a settlement on East Falkland is named in honor of Robert Fitzroy. <br></br> Chart no. 1354.
