DESCRIPTION: Interesting and uncommon folding 1895 edition (bottom of chart) of an antique nautical chart first printed in 1875. This intact linen-backed large folding chart of the Irish sea was published by the French Admiralty (Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine). Covers a wide area of Ireland and western portions of Britain including Belfast and Dublin , Isle of Man, and Holyhead Island. Lighthouses highlighted in yellow.
The antique chart folds to 5" x 9 1/2". Folds into 3 sections horizontally and 8 sections vertically. With a printed seller's sticker on front: " Maison Andriveau Goujon. Henry Barrere, Editeur-Geographe. 21 Rue du Bac, Paris". On the sticker below the seller's attribution is a script annotation of the chart title and a date of 1906.
Insets of the Port of Killough, Port of Ardglass, and a small view of the entrance to the Bay of Dundalk. Platemark is apparent but the chart is probably lithographic due to late 19th century provenance. Number 3460. Price: two francs.The Depot de la Marine was established in 1720 under the French Ministry of the Navy to collect, preserve, and publish nautical charts, sailing directions, and maritime intelligence for the French naval service. Its purpose was both archival and practical: to centralize geographic knowledge gathered from voyages, surveys, and colonial administration, and to convert that information into standardized charts for navigation. Over the eighteenth century the Depot became the principal hydrographic authority of France, issuing engraved sea charts that incorporated data from naval expeditions, colonial outposts, and scientific voyages.
Following the French Revolution, the institution was reorganized and its chart production expanded, particularly during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as global maritime competition intensified. The Depot de la Marine supervised official surveys, revised earlier charts, and maintained copperplates for continued reissue as coastal knowledge improved. In 1886 it was formally reorganized as the Service hydrographique de la Marine, the predecessor of today’s French hydrographic office. Charts bearing the Depot imprint remain important records of French naval activity, colonial expansion, and the technical development of European hydrography.

Nice. Clean and intact. Slightly browned but all linen backing is intact with no tears, stains, or large holes. Foxing is found on the linen backing only, not evident on the front.
