DESCRIPTION: Folding map of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and vicinity, published by H. S. Hutchinson & Co., booksellers and stationers of New Bedford in 1892, with a copyright imprint of Geo. H. Walker & Co., Boston. The map combines the city's street plan with detailed coverage of the surrounding coastal landscape, including Dartmouth, Westport, Fairhaven, Buzzards Bay and portions of the Elizabeth Islands.

Roads, railroads, waterways, ponds and coastal features are shown, with selected routes highlighted in red. Along the shore, the map identifies harbors, coves, points, beaches and offshore rocks. Dashed lines across Buzzards Bay indicate steamboat routes, connecting the mainland with island destinations. Naushon, Pasque and Nashawena appear along the southern portion of the sheet. A useful record of New Bedford's regional transportation connections and the coastal geography of southeastern Massachusetts.

This very rare map combines a humorous view of the community and surrounding Columbia River country with a prominent explanation of plutonium production and a red mushroom cloud.<br><br> Richland expanded rapidly during World War II as the residential community for workers at the nearby Hanford Engineer Works. Part of the Manhattan Project, Hanford produced the plutonium used in the first atomic test at Trinity and in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in August 1945. Bergdahl's map places the everyday buildings and activities of this purpose-built community within the landscape of atomic production.<br><br> The illustrated town includes housing, schools, shops, and Kadlec Hospital. Beyond Richland, the Columbia River links the Hanford installations with Priest Rapids and Grand Coulee Dam. Mount Rainier, Badger Mountain, Rattlesnake Mountain, and Horse Heaven appear alongside coyotes, mountain goats, and a wind-blowing face above the arid country labeled "Sage & Sand."<br><br> At right, a simplified diagram traces the conversion of uranium into plutonium-239, culminating in an atomic explosion. Its placement beside the cheerful townscape offers a revealing expression of local identity in the immediate postwar years, when nuclear achievement became a source of community pride. D. Bache. Titled "Reconnoissance of the Passes of the Delta of the Mississippi, Louisiana," the chart records changes since 1839, based on work conducted under Lieutenant B. F. Sands of the U.S. Navy.<br><br>Separate plans depict South West Pass, Garden Island Bay, and the eastern mouths around Blind Bay, including Pass a Loutre, North East Pass, and South Pass. Numerous depth soundings, shoals, offshore bars, and coastal outlines document the shifting approaches through which vessels entered the river. A smaller "Sub-Sketch" places these entrances within the broader Mississippi delta.<br><br>Sailing directions accompany the plans, providing practical guidance for navigating the river mouths. The chart documents the changing geography of the delta and the navigational obstacles facing shipping bound for New Orleans in the mid-nineteenth century.
