DESCRIPTION: Very scarce plan of Exeter, New Hampshire by Phinehas Merrill engraved and first printed in 1802. This artifact is likely a later re-strike from the original plate ca. 1900. The engraving is in excellent condition with a strong impression, evident platemark, ample margins, and matches the 1802 edition in size and all other features.
The plan is printed to fine laid paper with a watermark "Little Chart England", a characteristic of paper made at the Ford Paper Mill in the village of Little Chart. Beginning in 1876 Joseph Batchelor (ex. Whatman) rented the mill and began producing fine handmade paper at the Ford Mill.
A plan of the compact part of the town of Exeter, at the head of the southerly branch of Piscataqua River
