DESCRIPTION: Beautifully illustrated first edition folding map of the middle Florida Keys including Marathon Key circa 2000. First edition published by William Mickey Art and Design. Map is annotated with names of local businesses.

Verso with lists of local restaurants, shopping, accommodations, recreation, and services. While the map image appears not to have changed between the first and second editions (other than the author's attribution), the lists of businesses on the verso differ greatly between the two editions.

Apparently scarce on the market in either edition.

Details	1944	Sederlund--C-	Map-of-the-Cabanas-Tract-at-Boca-Raton-Florida	Fascinating plat related to the development of Boca Raton, Florida south of the Boca Raton inlet in the immediate post-WWII era. <br><br> We offer an unrecorded tract map for the "Cabanas Tract Unit 1" in Boca Raton, Florida, located just south of the Boca Raton Inlet. Four major developers owned that land over time, Mizner, Geist, Schine, and Davis (1). Based on the plat's style and execution as well as street names, it seems that the Cabanas Tract plat is likely a J. Myer Schine proposed development plat dating between 1944 and 1956. (J. Meyer Schine purchased the Boca Raton Club and the Spanish River Land Co. in 1944. He owned it until 1956, when Arthur Vining Davis/ Arvida acquired the property and associated land holdings.) <br><br> One interesting feature is that the lot sizes on the plat are much larger than those found in that area today. Also, the green area, likely a proposed park, does not exist. Today Spanish River Road (then Palm Drive) extends all the way from E. Camino Real to E. 31st Street. <br><br> Based on the scale the hand-colored portion of our Cabanas Tract encompasses approximately 130 acres and extends southward from Via Cabana Drive to Bel Air Road (Now SE 31st), street a distance about 3600 linear feet. <br><br> Drawn by C. Issued for the insurance industry’s internal use, Sanborn maps were the most comprehensive commercial record of fire risk and urban building characteristics in the U.S. before aerial photography and digital databases transformed insurance underwriting practices. <br><br> A fine set of maps reflecting the post WWII, baby-boom era in West Palm Beach. The original volumes were issued in 1952 and new pages were added up to 1957 to reflect changes in the buildings represented. The maps record West Palm Beach ca. 1957 as it issued an $18-million bond to modernize sewers and extend fire-protection systems west of downtown, capturing a pivotal moment when the pre-war resort grid gave way to a growing suburban city. <br><br> These original Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlases for West Palm Beach, Florida (1952–1957) document the city at the height of its post-war expansion. It presents a detailed bird’s-eye view of western Washington, extending from Olympia and Tacoma northward through Seattle and Everett to Bellingham and Vancouver, B.C., and eastward to the Cascade Mountains. The map highlights major highways, railways, ferry routes, and points of interest, emphasizing the transportation network and recreational attractions of the Pacific Northwest at mid-century. Drawn by Ed Poland. <br><br> Insets along the borders depict regional scenery, industry, and Native American–inspired motifs. The lower right legend identifies the “Unequaled Transportation Facilities” that connect the area by train, highway, and ferry service. The title panel describes the region as unique in North America for combining sea, forest, and mountain environments within a compact area. Printed in full color with topographic shading and decorative borders, this map reflects the Kroll Company’s skill in cartographic illustration and mid-20th-century regional promotion. <br><br> Ed (Edwin) Poland was a long-time chief cartographer at the Seattle-based Kroll Map Company, active from at least the 1930s through the postwar era. Poland’s work for Kroll is characterized by dense place-name coverage, promotional vignettes, and clear drafting that made the firm’s Pacific Northwest maps popular for decades.
