DESCRIPTION: Attractive original pen and ink manuscript map of the lines of the Norfolk and Western Railway signed by W. D. Sanford (bottom right corner) and dated within at January 25, 1923. Shows lines of the Chesapeake and Ohio, Hocking Valley, Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac (Washington-Southern) and two other lines now faded but the Virginian Railway; and the Carolina, Clinch River … Some lines and text (especially red ink) faded from cleaning. With the Norfolk and Western logo.
At the end of 1925,the Norfolk and Western Railway had conducted freight traffic of 13,684 million net ton-miles across 2,241 miles of route on 4,429 miles of track. Over time the N&W merged with several of the connecting lines including the Virginian Railway (VGN) in 1959.
