Scallion depicts extensive areas of the country submerged beneath the sea, dramatically altering California and the Pacific Coast, the Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Gulf Coast, and Atlantic seaboard. Existing state boundaries and cities remain visible, allowing comparison between familiar geography and his imagined future landscape.
Scallion attributed the map to a series of visions beginning in 1979 and predicted earthquakes, rising seas, changes in the Earth's poles, and other upheavals. Although the predicted transformations never occurred, the map is an unusual example of late twentieth-century speculative cartography, reflecting the New Age movement and the environmental and millennial anxieties surrounding the approach of the year 2000.
Gordon-Michael Scallion (1942-2019) was an American futurist, spiritual teacher, and self-described intuitive best known for his predictions of dramatic geological changes to the Earth. Through his New Hampshire-based Matrix Institute, Scallion published newsletters, books, and a series of "Future Maps" illustrating geographic changes he claimed to have foreseen in visions beginning in the late 1970s. His work attracted a following within the New Age movement during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly as interest in environmental catastrophe and millennial predictions increased approaching the year 2000.
