The map presents Scallion's speculative vision of the United States following catastrophic geological and climatic changes that he predicted would occur near the end of the twentieth century.<br><br> Not laminated.<br><br>
Scallion depicts extensive areas of the country submerged beneath the sea, dramatically altering California and the Pacific Coast, the Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Gulf Coast, and Atlantic seaboard. Existing state boundaries and cities remain visible, allowing comparison between familiar geography and his imagined future landscape.<br><br>
Scallion attributed the map to a series of visions beginning in 1979 and predicted earthquakes, rising seas, changes in the Earth's poles, and other upheavals. Although the predicted transformations never occurred, the map is an unusual example of late twentieth-century speculative cartography, reflecting the New Age movement and the environmental and millennial anxieties surrounding the approach of the year 2000.
