Pacific Seacoast Experience

DESCRIPTION: A richly illustrated pictorial map of the Pacific coast, drawn by Suzanne Shaw in 1985. Centered on California, Pacific Seacoast Experience combines coastal geography with scenes from maritime history. Sailing ships, sea life, explorers, lighthouses, and historical anecdotes crowd the land and water, inviting the viewer to follow the coast from place to place.

Illustrated panels around the border depict notable vessels and lighthouses, while inset maps and text add detail to the main image. The 1814 manuscript and the others, dated August 1881, includes an "Authorities" section identifying sources used in its preparation.<br><br> Together, the manuscripts record the transformation of the Back Bay. The 1814 map depicts the original tidal landscape of marshes, creeks, islands, and flats. The 1836 map shows changes following construction of the Mill Dam and associated causeways and waterways. The 1851 map records conditions immediately before large-scale reclamation.<br><br> By 1861, filling operations were advancing westward, with newly created land, streets, and building lots replacing the tidal basin. The 1871 manuscript shows the recognizable Back Bay emerging, with filling substantially advanced, the street grid established, and residential development underway.<br><br> The manuscripts are also significant in relation to Fuller & Whitney's use of blueprint reproduction. William H. Whitney was an early practitioner of the process in Boston.<br><br>

The map presents Scallion's speculative vision of the United States following catastrophic geological and climatic changes that he predicted would occur near the end of the twentieth century.<br><br> Not laminated.<br><br> Scallion depicts extensive areas of the country submerged beneath the sea, dramatically altering California and the Pacific Coast, the Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Gulf Coast, and Atlantic seaboard. Existing state boundaries and cities remain visible, allowing comparison between familiar geography and his imagined future landscape.<br><br> Scallion attributed the map to a series of visions beginning in 1979 and predicted earthquakes, rising seas, changes in the Earth's poles, and other upheavals. Although the predicted transformations never occurred, the map is an unusual example of late twentieth-century speculative cartography, reflecting the New Age movement and the environmental and millennial anxieties surrounding the approach of the year 2000. <br><br>

Its playful "Fun-Tier Capital" title and offbeat imagery offer an early visual expression of the distinctive personality that would eventually become closely associated with the city.<br><br> The map combines recognizable geography with hundreds of cartoon-like vignettes, transforming Austin into a lively visual portrait of the city during the early 1970s. Roads, neighborhoods, waterways, and prominent locations provide the geographic framework, while whimsical figures and buildings emphasize the city's entertainment, university, commercial, and outdoor culture. A broad simulated wood-grain border reinforces the map's distinctly period appearance.<br><br> Measuring approximately 40 x 30 inches, the map is an uncommon example of the large pictorial promotional maps produced for American cities during the postwar period.
