DESCRIPTION: Colorful pictorial map of South Carolina by Jak Smyrl, copyrighted 1969 in Columbia, S.C. Titled "A Caricature Map of South Carolina," the map presents the state through a dense collection of cartoon figures, illustrated landmarks, local activities, and historical references. Town names and waterways provide a geographic framework for scenes extending from the mountainous northwest to Charleston, Beaufort, and the Atlantic coast.

Oscar Jackson "Jak" Smyrl (1923-2007) was a South Carolina cartoonist, illustrator, and pictorial mapmaker born in Camden. After serving with the U.S. Marines during World War II, he studied art in Pittsburgh and at the University of South Carolina. He worked for 37 years as a staff artist at Columbia's newspaper, The State, and illustrated numerous books. His humorous maps of South Carolina, Pawleys Island, and the Grand Strand combine local history, regional landmarks, caricatures, and deliberately misspelled captions.
