Manuscript Map of Cadiz

Sold

Plan de la baye de Cadiz et des environs Dressé en 1808 par ordre de l'Amiral Rosilly

DESCRIPTION: Sold

Antique French pen and ink manuscript map of Cadiz, Spain ca. 1808. Scale: "Une mille." Interestingly, for a map associated with a naval officer, there is little hydrographic detail or soundings as there might be in a nautical chart , but instead a great deal of topographic detail about the surrounding area. Fourteen key locations are noted by lettering and described by a legend at the left of the map. Decorative compass rose denotes north to the upper left. This matches the style and form of Roy Kemp, a known photographer active in New Orleans during the mid-20th century. Kemp specialized in nightclub and glamour photography, producing promotional shots for performers at venues like the 500 Club, Sho-Bar, and other Bourbon Street establishments. Kemp was one of a small number of photographers who documented the burlesque and cabaret scenes in New Orleans. His work often appeared uncredited in postcard sets, handbills, and matchbooks from clubs on Bourbon Street. His signature typically appears in the lower corner of images, either in stylized cursive or block letters.
