1769 Mason and Dixon Map of Chesapeake Bay and the Delmarva Peninsula

A Map of that Part of America where a Degree of Latitude was measured for the Royal Society: By Cha. Mason & Jere. Dixon

DESCRIPTION: Antique engraved map documenting the region of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon's measurement of a degree of latitude for the Royal Society. Published in London's Gentleman's Magazine in 1769, the map covers Chesapeake Bay, the Delmarva Peninsula, and Delaware Bay, extending from Philadelphia south to the Virginia capes. Named settlements include Baltimore, Annapolis, Dover, and New Castle, with rivers, principal roads, and coastal islands shown.

The map records the geographical setting of Mason and Dixon's scientific work to determine the ground distance corresponding to a degree of latitude. Undertaken during their American surveying mission, this measurement contributed to the study of the earth's dimensions and form. The prominent north-south survey line through the peninsula relates to this work.

This is the second edition of the map first published with Mason's report in the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions in 1768. The rectangular title panel names both surveyors, while the upper-right imprint reads "Gent. Mag. Nov. 1769." A fleur-de-lis north indicator, mileage scale, and latitude markings complete the engraving.
