DESCRIPTION: Large-format U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart of Florida's Gulf Coast, extending from Hog Island northward to Wall Creek and including Anclote Anchorage and the approaches to Tarpon Springs. Bearing a September 1886 issue statement under superintendent F. M. Thorn, this example incorporates corrections from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers surveys through June 1910.
Dense soundings delineate the shallow offshore waters, shoals, channels, and anchorages along an intricately indented coastline. Islands, tidal creeks, coastal vegetation, and navigational aids accompany three compass roses and scales in statute miles, nautical miles, and kilometers. Onshore detail includes the street grid of Tarpon Springs, a railroad alignment, Sutherland, and scattered buildings and roads.
The chart's Hog Island is the former barrier island subsequently divided into present-day Honeymoon and Caladesi islands by the hurricane of 1921. It therefore preserves coastal geography preceding that major natural alteration, as well as the extensive development of the surrounding mainland.
The authorities credit triangulation conducted in 1860-1861, topography by W. I. Vinal in 1886, and hydrographic work in 1884 and 1886. These earlier surveys, supplemented by later corrections, document the continuing effort to chart safe passage through the shallow waters serving Tarpon Springs and the Anclote coast.
