| $675.00 | Foard--Zoe | Hollywood-and-Beverly-Hills-Pictorial-Souvenir-Map-Scarf | Very rare, colorful pre-WWII fringed souvenir head-scarf printed with a pictorial map of Hollywood and Beverly Hills, combining movie studios, celebrity associations, theaters, hotels, and nightclubs. With attached head comb. Yellow streets wind among illustrated buildings and red hills, while a large compass rose, star-patterned border, and fringed edges frame the design.

Named attractions include the Hollywood Bowl, Hollywoodland, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Roosevelt Hotel, Ciro's, and the Brown Derby. Beverly Hills appears at lower left, with the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and Victor Hugo's restaurant. Mae West's Ravenswood apartment building is identified, while Mickey Mouse appears beside the amusing disclaimer that he lives "several miles away from this Map."

A theatrical marquee forms the title cartouche, and searchlights converge on a standing figure near the lower edge. The scarf presents Hollywood as a landscape of entertainment and celebrity, translating the pictorial tourist map into a wearable souvenir.

Zoe Foard was a designer associated with pictorial souvenir handkerchiefs depicting California and the American West. Her work was commercially advertised by 1937, when a Pennsylvania newspaper promoted her "tapestry hankies" in sixteen different scenes.

1940 is the earliest defensible date for this scarf, assuming the label identifies the Sunset Strip Ciro's, which opened in January 1940. The design could have been produced that year. 1947 is the latest defensible working date for the map's design, assuming it presents the named nightclubs as operating attractions. The Trocadero closed permanently in 1947, making it the strongest upper-date clue. There are no explicit patriotic, WWII or military references. There are no clearly identifiable military bases, servicemen, war-bond appeals, or wartime slogans. This supports the 1941 date. |
